ANNOUNCEMENTS & ONGOING EVENTS

Local WWII Naval Hero Remembered in a New Book
Carmine “Carmen” Anthony Parziale of Weedville was on board the WW II submarine USS Grunion (SS-216) when it was lost at sea during the early days of World War II. Carmen’s niece Mary (Parziale) Bentz and her husband Richard have just released a new book which provides biographies for the entire 70-man crew of the Grunion, including that of Mary’s uncle Carmen. An earlier book, Fatal Dive, by Peter F. Steven, documents the incredible story of the search for and discovery of the Grunion, which disappeared without a trace on July 30, 1942, near the Aleutian Island of Kiska shortly after the Battle of Midway. When Fatal Dive was outlined, it was decided to include a biography of each member of the crew in an appendix. Due to space limitations, the bios were necessarily brief.

The new book, We Remember Them: A Biographical Supplement for Fatal Dive, by Mary and Richard Bentz, provides extended biographies of the Grunion crew, using information that the authors gleaned from many sources: Catherine (Kay) Abele, wife of the submarine’s commander, LCDR Mannert (Jim) Abele, maintained correspondence with the families of the entire crew, officers and enlisted men alike, through the years following Grunion’s loss. Susan Abele, wife of Jim and Kay Abele’s son Bruce, organized that correspondence into binders. These letters became an invaluable resource for this book. The letters provided insight into what it was like to live without loved ones lost to war with no information about what had become of them. Archival military records at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) in College Park, Maryland, and the National Personnel Records Center, Military Personnel Records (NPRC-MPR) in St. Louis, Missouri, provided the crew members’ military history. These same sources provided copies of family letters to the Navy searching desperately for answers about the fate of their loved ones. Charles Hinman, owner of the OnEternalPatrol.com website provided pictures of many of the crew. Other sources included photographs, memorabilia, and personal remembrances from family members and friends of the crew of the Grunion. Many shared letters home from crew members. These provided a look at the sailors’ hopes, their aspirations, and their concerns about family members and loved ones left behind. We Remember Them and Fatal Dive are both available at Amazon.com.
